"The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison."
– Ann Wigmore

"That anyone should need to write a book advising people to "eat food" could be taken as a measure of our alienation and confusion. Or we can choose to see it in a more positive light and count ourselves fortunate indeed that there is once again real food for us to eat."
– Michael Pollan, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto

Nutrition Summer Camp 2017

The National Nutrition Centre hosted Nutrition Summer Camp 2017 at two locations: Lester Vaughan Secondary School and Springer Memorial Secondary School. The camps were held from July 10th to July 28th catering to children 9-13 years.

As always, one of our goals is to encourage children (and their families) to make healthy eating one of their life style choices. Another of our goals is to introduce children to a variety of healthy foods prepared in creative ways in the hope of opening their minds and dispelling the myth that healthy foods “taste bad”!

This year our focus was on increasing fibre as this is one of the 8 Key Recommendations found in the Food Based Dietary Guidelines for Barbados. The recipes were chosen to show how to incorporate a variety of high fibre foods in tasty and enjoyable dishes that the whole family will want to try. We hope you’ll see that they’re very easy - even a child can prepare them!

In addition, because calcium is very important for proper growth and development, we included low fat dairy products in several of the recipes - demonstrating that you don’t have to drink a glass of milk to get the benefits.

Please take a look at the Summer Camp 2017 Recipe Book and get some ideas on how to make your family meals healthier. Enjoy!
